New pyranonaphthazarin and 2-naphthoic acid derivatives from the mangrove endophytic fungus Leptosphaerulina sp. SKS032

Two new compounds, named leptospyranonaphthazarin A (1) and leptosnaphthoic acid A (2), together with four known compounds (3–6) were isolated from an endophytic fungus Leptosphaerulina sp. SKS032. Their structures were assigned using spectroscopic methods, computational methods, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. In the antibiotic assay, compounds 1, 2, and 6 exhibited antibacterial activities against Staphylococcus aureus with minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of 25.0, 50.0, and 50.0 μg/mL, respectively.     

Can transposable element copy number distribution parameters be estimated from natural populations of Drosophila melanogaster?

The copy frequency distribution of a transposable element family in a Drosophila melanogaster natural population is generally characterised by the values of the Charlesworths' model parameters α and β (Charlesworth & Charlesworth, 1983). The estimation of these parameters is made using the observed distribution of the occupied sites in a population sample. Several results have been interpreted as due either to the influence of stochastic factors or to deterministic factors (transposition, excision, selection…). The accuracy of this method was tested by estimations performed on samples from simulated populations. The results show that with the sample size usually used for natural population studies, the confidence intervals are too large to reasonably deduce either the element copy number distribution or the values of transposition and excision rate and selective coefficients.     

Adaptive mate-guarding by males ofOntholestes cingulatus (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae)

Males of the staphylinid beetle Ontholestes cingulatusremain close by their mates following copulation while the mated females oviposit. The hypothesis that male behavior constitutes adaptive mate-guarding was tested by examining three predictions: (1) receptive females would be scarce, (2) some females would mate multiply, and (3) males that stayed with their mates would often be able to repel rivals intent on takeovers. All three predictions were confirmed. These results and additional comparative evidence suggest that postcopulatory associations have evolved in the Staphylinidae only when the reproductive costs of this form of mate-guarding are outweighed by its benefits.

Change in the H2 photoproduction capability in a synchronously grown aerobic nitrogen-fixing cyanobacterium,Synechococcus sp. Miami BG 043511

Synchronously growing cells of nitrogen-fixing Synechococcus sp. Miami BG 043511 were harvested periodically and the capability for hydrogen photoproduction in closed vessels was measured under hydrogen production conditions. The capability for hydrogen photoproduction in cells was correlated with that of cellular carbohydrate content. Cells with a high carbohydrate content exhibited a high capacity for hydrogen production and those with low carbohydrate content exhibited low capacity for hydrogen production. Nitrogenase activity at the onset of incubation did not coincide with a capability for the cells to produce hydrogen during the subsequent incubation period. Interestingly, when cells with a high capacity for hydrogen photoaccumulation were incubated, alternate periods of hydrogen and oxygen accumulation were observed at 12 hour intervals. About 0.5 ml of hydrogen per ml of cell suspension was accumulated in flasks during the initial 12-h incubation period. These observations indicate that the use of synchronous culture can be one of the ways of provide materials suitable not only for basic studies but also for applied aspects of hydrogen photoproduction.
